Swarms

Swarming is natural for honeybees and the way they expand their colonies.

The bees will leave their home and gather in a ball like the pictures attached, this is a temporary stop whilst they look for a new home.

Unfortunatley, their new home could be the roof space of a house so it is important beekeepers can catch the swarms before they move on.

We have had several messages where people have honeybees and bumblebees in their wall cavities and unfortunately there is nothing we can do to help once they are there, most swarms will die off naturally, without the intervention from beekeepers.

Different Types of Bees and Wasps

These are the most common bees and wasps we see in the UK

Bumblebee

Bumblebee

Description: Large, round and fuzzy

Nesting: Small groups, last for several weeks and usually stay in dry and dark areas such as bird boxes and underground.

Sting: Yes, but unlikely as they are quite docile and they only sting when provoked. They can sting several times without dying.

We cannot assist with the removal of bumblebees.

We would advise to leave them as they are as bumblebees naturally die off by Autumn at the latest. Bumblebees are pollinators and vital for the environment.

Honeybees

Description: Oval with golden yellow and brown stripes with little hairs.

Nesting: Large groups of around 60,000 in a beehive or inside cavities or under objects.

Sting: Yes, but unlikely, they only do this to defend themselves and die afterwards.

We can assist with the removal of honeybees if they are not in your wall cavities.

We cannot assist with the removal of wasps.

We would advise to try leave them as they are as they naturally die off by Winter at the latest, but if they are causing issues with where they are, you can contact pest control.
